Teach Your Girls to Love Their Curls With #BeCurlCentric Coloring Book

When I decided to go natural four years ago, I didn’t initially think about the impact it could have on my girls down the road. But shortly after I did my big chop, I realized that I was going to be the first example that my girls had of loving and embracing their natural curls. I realized that if they saw how much I loved my hair, that they would grow to love theirs too…regardless of what “standards of beauty” they continue to see on TV or in ads, or even in books. It took me 31 years before I began to embrace and love my curls, and I don’t want my girls to take that long. But how do you teach your girls to love their curls?

Well, when I heard about the Be Curl Centric Curly Kids Coloring Book, I immediately got excited! Not only does this book teach our young girls how to love and embrace their natural curls, but there is an image for every type of curly girl out there – teeny weeny afros, puff balls, locs, two strand twists, wash and go, etc. And who doesn’t love to color?! My girls (ages 3 & 5) got so excited when I showed them the pages, they got right to coloring before I could barely even set the pages down.

When my husband and I asked our three-year-old what she liked about the pages, she said, “the girls have pretty shoes and pretty pants and pretty hair.” So we asked her, “Who else has pretty hair?” And she responded with, “my sister, and mommy and me”. I tell them all the time (especially when I’m doing their hair), that their hair is beautiful. So it’s great to have something for them to be able to see themselves in. It was also a fun activity that brought them together as sisters…no fighting or fussing, just fun coloring. And that was a joy to see 🙂

We should be the first to tell our girls how beautiful their hair is. Images are so powerful that we can draw conclusions based solely on what we see. Akirashanti, author and coblogger of CurlCentric.com took this into consideration when she created Curly Kids Coloring Book. She created the book as a tool for her young daughter. Her goal as a mom is to guide her daughter and help her foster a healthy relationship early, with her hair. Curly Kids Coloring Book plays a pivotal role in the fostering of relationships as the images are relatable

I love this coloring book! I may print the pages out and color them myself lol. I love that you’re teaching your daughters about how beautiful their hair is at such a young age. That’s something I wish I had and hope to instill in my daughters if I have any in the future.

This is such a great idea for young Black kids. I’m loving the fact that we as a society are able to have such tools for the young generation to grow in self-confidence.

What an awesome concept. What a great illustration to show our daughters the range of beauty to our natural hair. I only wish they had thrown a couple of boys in as well being that I have 3 and 4 year old sons that have huge curly Afros. I do recognize how important it is to instill in our daughters their beauty and self worth. Thanks for sharing!

That’s so true Apryl! Maybe you can reach out to her and see if she can do a version for boys (if she’s not already doing one)? I have several friends and even family who have boys with curly heads and it would be great for them too. But yes, generally it’s our girls that need the reassurance of their beauty and self worth 🙂

OMG I love the concept of having a coloring book catered to naturally curly girls. I’ve been natural for more than 10 years, but I started embracing my curls maybe like 3 1/2 years ago. I too have a daughter and I’m always telling her how beautiful her hair is and how she can wear it in so many styles. She ask me all the time can she wear an afro (twist out) and because of what we have instilled in her she LOVES her hair and brown skin. She’s our little artist so she’s going to love coloring images that she can relate to. I want to see more resources catered to children of color to encourage them to love themselves. I love that your 3 year old already sees herself as beautiful along with her sister and mommy at a young age. You and your husband are doing a phenomenal job. Thanks for sharing and I just ordered the coloring book and can’t wait to receive it.

Aww thanks so much for sharing Siobhan! Isn’t it so amazing to see their confidence at such a young age?! My girls wore their hair out in an afro for the first time yesterday (simply because I didn’t have time to do it lol) and they absolutely loved it. I really did almost bring me to tears when my three-year-old said that because I didn’t have that mindset nor did I feel beautiful with natural hair as a kid. Thank you so much for your kind words, I truly appreciate them. And I’m so glad you ordered the book, can’t wait to hear about your little girl’s experience 🙂

I did the same thing with baby girl and still do: tell her how beautiful her hair is on a regular basis (well, when she actually brushes it anyways). I so love this book! So maybe they need to make one for us grown folks? LOL!

I am so loving that this natural movement is spilling over to the children and building their self-confidence in their hair early. We didnt have stuff like this growing up so for people to create books (coloring) for children makes it even more fun and educational to love the texture of their hair. These cartoon are adorable as well!
