10 Key Lessons From Oprah’s Life You Want Weekend (Part 2)

One week ago today, the Oprah’s Life You Want Weekend came to the Washington, DC. Since I had to be in NYC for a very important meeting during day one, I was thrilled to be able to send the fab T. Espinoza in my place to capture Mama O in all her glory. If you missed part one/day one, be sure to check it out here. To have been invited as a media rep to cover this event has forever changed my life. There are no words to describe how truly grateful I was (am) to have been given this incredible opportunity (and to top it off, the seats were simply fabulous!)

I got back from NYC at 3am Saturday morning and could barely sleep with anticipation for what I would experience later that day with Oprah and the rest of her trailblazers. With about three hours of sleep, I was back up and ready to GO! The excitement was the adrenaline I needed to get me through the day. After following tweets and Instagram posts for #LifeYouWantDC, I was eager to experience it first hand.

I was so full after leaving the Verizon Center that day after being with so much power and wisdom that I couldn’t wait to share what I learned. But how do you put eight hours worth of audio, video, and notes into a few posts? Honestly, my sister-friend Diana Ramsey of Sisters with Beauty said it best: you can’t (check out her powerful video here). But I’m going to try and do that.

First of all, the energy, the vibe, the excitement that filled that room was contagious! It was like one big party with thousands of strangers who felt more like friends. Like many others whom I shared the experience with that day, I came ready to take notes, to learn, to listen and to hone into my greatness so I can truly continue to create the life that I want.

The day started with “The Life You Want Meditation” with Mark Nepo who talked with us about the idea that having the life you want is created by being present with the life you already have.

Oprah spoke about “Awakening to the Life You Want”. The underlying message was that we are the co-creators of our lives. There is a purpose for everything we go through, even misery. Because sometimes we need a reminder to not get too comfortable.

Elizabeth Gilbert was a powerful storyteller that spoke to finding and pursuing “The Quest”. We all have a calling. Some of us choose to answer it, and others choose to ignore it. But the call comes regardless of what is going on in our lives. Many times we have to go through our own transformation which calls for getting out of our comfort zone.

Rob Bell spoke to the concept that “Everything is Spritual”. We have to embrace all of the life we have (the good, the bad, the ugly). Stop trying to rush through the struggles that have the power to transform us. Create a new plan and give up the bitterness. Don’t focus on the wrong things.

Iyanla Vanzant…she probably needs a whole separate post because there were just way to many nuggets. She had us laughing from beginning to end with her “Here’s to Life” message. She explained that the life you want is on the “other side of the labor pains it takes to birth it”. We all have to go through “labor pains” to pursue our dreams & try something new. But, she explains, you can’t push too soon.
