This is the longest break I’ve taken from blogging since I started in 2012. And let me tell you, it’s been a much-needed hitatus. I’m always talking about the importance of taking charge of your overall sanity. If you get overwhelmed or feel like you have a lot on your plate, then it’s your choice to remove a few things from your plate (or not).
I learned this important lesson from a friend and mentor. We are always in choice. Sometimes that’s a hard fact to own up to. This is why I was thrilled when Essence Magazine asked me to write an article around juggling motherhood. This month, my article was featured in the September issue!!!!
Motherhood Takes a Village
As a mother, you don’t have to juggle everything by yourself. You’ll need different villages to fulfill different roles. Here are some essential mommy villages every mom needs.
I shared a full page of tips and lessons learned in my Essence article, but here are a few tips to get you started.
Family: For travel or last-minute emergencies, I am thankful to have family in place that can step in at a moments’ notice. Note: family doesn’t always mean “blood.”
School: When I started homeschooling, I was clueless. Connecting with other “veteran” homeschool moms was key. I found them through my own network & through Facebook groups. You may find yours at the bus stop, or by joining the PTA.
Neighborhood: I’m a big supporter of getting to know your neighbors. It’s a comforting feeling to know that I can call on mine to check on my kids if need be. Your neighbors should be your allies.
Girlfriend: For those rough days, there is nothing like having lunch or dinner with a great mommy friend to decompress; one who lets you relax, relate, release.
Self-care is about setting boundaries
One thing that I continue to learn is the different facets of self-care. It’s not just treating yourself or getting a mani/pedi. It’s about creating boundaries. And it’s also about asking for help when you need it.
Between working everyday motherhood, homeschool, working my business, serving my clients, and helping my daughter start her business, things have been quite hectic.
So I had to regroup, set some boundaries and take a break from certain things that could no longer be a priority. It meant saying no to opportunities and people that I wanted to say yes to. But it’s allowed me to regroup and create a new strategy moving forward.
It can be scary, but set boundaries when you need to, and be unapologetic about it.
Below is the post I shared on Instagram to share my excitement!
Go out and get your village! You were definitely not meant to go at this motherhood life on your own. You can start by joining my Facebook group, The FLY Mom Suite.
