Is it You, or Your Alter Ego You See in the Mirror?

Last Friday, I had the pleasure of attending a Personal Transformation Workshop with Doreen Rainey.  To simply say that it was amazing, would truly be an understatement.  I knew that I wanted needed to be there, but didn’t realize just how much until the workshop began.   I knew that it would force me to take a long, hard look at my own reflection in the mirror, which was something I wasn’t sure I was quite ready for.

The workshop was from 9am-4pm on 8/17 and by 9:28am, some of us were already beginning to transform.  Personally, I’ve been more focused on defining and achieving my (business) goals, that the question of who I needed to become to reach them pretty much took a back seat.  But believe me: before we even ate lunch, I had a clear understanding that I needed to get back to my own personal transformation in order to reach my goals.   My journey began at the beginning of the year when I started my own business, and then again when I decided to chop all my hair off back in March.  But the key to this transformation thing is consistency!

The key take-aways I received from attending this workshop were:

  • The need to remove my own mask, and take a deeper look at my personal life/issues – my “a-ha” moment was that I really didn’t want to face my personal life in the mirror.  It was much easier to just stay focused on the business.  But the success of my business is directly related to the success of my personal growth & development.
  • Understanding that there is a cost with certain things that I’ve been tolerating/putting up with – my “a-ha” moment was realizing how certain distractions have impacted me, and then writing down what I was going to do to put a stop to it (three words: just say no).
  • Understanding what my top three core values are – my “a-ha” moment came when Doreen explained that in times of stress, it is generally when we have compromised one or more of our inner most values.  For example, one of my top three core values is family.  I realized that when I don’t have take time to just relax with my family, I’m not a very happy person.  So I committed to reserving one weekend a month to do absolutely nothing.
  • Being able to clearly identify my top three priorities – my “a-ha” moment was breaking these priorities down and then identifying S.M.A.R.T. Goals for each of them.  It’s one thing to write down goals, but if you can’t keep track of your progress, then what good are they?  This was a great reminder.
  • The importance of aligning myself with the right people – this was an “a-ha” moment because it was something I was already in the process of doing.  It confirmed that it really is ok to “take inventory” on the people that I allow in my circle.  Are they there to lift me up or shoot me down? Inspire or stifle?  Be a positive influence or a negative one?  I realized that it’s okay if my circle begins to change as I begin to grow both personally and professionally.

But as Doreen mentioned in her recent blog post, these “a-ha” moments mean nothing unless you’re ready to be committed to breaking through and moving beyond the “moment”.

So are you in need of a personal transformation makeover?  Be honest with the “(wo)man in the mirror”: are you seeing the person you want to see, or the person that truly exists?

In addition to inspiring you, Doreen will give you the tools you need to learn how to make the necessary changes in your life in order to define success for yourself, and then get the guts to go after it.  You can also find Doreen on Facebook and Twitter, as well as her Get Radical Conference site.

    Hi Christine,

As a mother of 3, I’ve struggled with making time for my job, my business, my hubby, my sick mom, and last but definitely not least, my kids. Doreen’s Get Radical approach was just what I needed to help me re-focus my energy. I was definitely one of the attendees who was transformed by 9:28am. We all need personal development…as we try to improve every faucet of our lives…and Doreen’s workshop did it for me!
