Talking with a friend today we were discussing that knowing there is a need for a side hustle to become richer (financially and otherwise) and knowing what that side hustle is, are two very different challenges to work out. Most would agree that a 9-5 will not make you rich because that’s just how the system works. There are salary caps for a reason. It’s all cleverly worked out. Trust me. However, if you do earn a lucrative 6-figures, you’re not working 9-5. More like 6 am-9 pm. Or some variation thereof which may include weekends etc. Point being, time freedom isn’t part of the package.
So a side hustle is a great way for you to engage in something you love and with some business acumen, perhaps also make a dollar or $5. If you’re blessed enough and willing to hustle enough, that side hustle can then become your main hustle, and the perks of entrepreneurship can ensue. Don’t get me wrong, it’s WORK, but it’s fulfilling work. But if you’re anything like my friend, knowing what to engage in as a side hustle isn’t as easy as it may seem.
Yeah you hear people say and ask “what do you love so much that you’d do it for free?” or “if money and time were no objects, what would you do?” Ummm….about a gajillion things. That was my answer a while ago. And though that sounds like a good problem to have, I heard someone say that too many ideas is as good as having NO idea. Both keep you paralyzed and stuck on ground zero.

So HOW do you find out what it is you should do? Trial and error.
There are so many things that I love to watch and thought I loved to engage in. For instance, I LOVE HGTV, and I watch a number of DIY videos on Youtube, and there’s something about the process from “drab to fab” that I love. However, an attempt to sand down a piece of furniture wasn’t as pleasurable as watching somebody else do it, lol. And that’s just the beginning. You’ve got to sand it, prime it, paint it, change out the hardware, seal it, THEN enjoy it, lol. Team too much effort, and I wasn’t tryna have any part of it. I still love watching it done though.
I can be a little artsy-fartsy sometimes and love watching people paint and draw elaborate portraits and scenery. But then I realized that the 10-minute sped-up video is actually footage spanning a week of effort and dedication to one piece. A week?! No ma’am. No thanks. I’ll stick to my stickman artwork, lol.
You get the picture though? (No pun intended). Until you try something out, you’ll never know for sure if it’s something you would love to engage in, let alone for FREE. Nobody said you have to figure it out in an hour. Jot down all your passions and try them out, one by one. One idea may take a month to execute. So be it. At least it’s a month of your time whereby you’ll come to a conclusion pertaining to the trajectory of your life. I say it’s time well spent. And if it takes a year to go through the list, it takes a year. At the end of it, you should have a couple of projects completed or served a few clientele and the experience will enrich you.
So if you’re one those that don’t know where to start, write a list and start crossing items out as you try them. If you already know your passion and haven’t taken the dive to make it a side hustle….girl, what you waiting on?!!! Let’s GO.
Stay blessed.
