Working Mom vs. Stay-at-home Mom…Does It Really Matter?

One thing I haven’t been able to figure out is the constant battle between one group of people — MOMS!  It’s a debate that is sparked time and time again and even made political headlines earlier this year (Ann Romney defends SAHMs).  But really: what exactly is the debate about?  I have actually been on both sides of the fence (or really, all three sides), and can say…it is all hard work (granted, I’ve never worked this hard at any of my jobs, but that’s besides the point).

I helped open up a 2,000 room hotel when my son was just 3 months old, working an average of 14 hour days (minimum).  I would get home just in time for my husband to leave for work at 8:30 (he works at night).  I would stay up with the baby at night, go to work during the day, and switch shifts/roles with my husband once he got home in the morning.  It was rough.  When our second child was born, I was still working in the same place, and although we weren’t “opening”, it was still a very fast-paced, high-volume working environment.  So what I didn’t/couldn’t finish in the office, usually went home with me (and with a blackberry, I was really “at work” all the time).  It was rough.  When our last child was born, I was home full-time…with a four-year-old, and two-year-old.  There’s just something about that third child that just sends everything over the top.  There are lots of words I could  use to describe this last year, but let’s just say…it was rough.

When I was working (outside of the home), I loved working, but always felt guilty for leaving the babies for so long.  At the same time, it became my “escape” to civilization.  But now that I’m a working stay-at-home mom (what I like to call myself – WSAHM), I have to say that I don’t miss my office job.

I came across this blog post and I think it settles the debate quite nicely: WOHM vs. SAHM – The Final Score!

Check it out and then come back and let me know what your thoughts are.  Why do you think there is so much controversy over what should actually be a united front?

Okay, here’s my two cents. A SAHM IS a WOHM. Working in the home or working outside of the home, we are all working and working HARD.

I agree as well! Being a Mom is a job that you never clock out from, it is 24/7 365. Whether you are in the office, in the living room or on the beach you are always on call!

Absolutely! That is so very true that you are “on-call” 24/7 365 regardless of what other responsibilities you may have. Thank you for your comment!
