National Day of Unplugging: 9 Reasons I Choose to Unplug & You Should Too

Last week, I eluded in my Mamas Mashup post about the National Day of Unplugging, and why we chose the topic of needing to unplug. This year, NDU will be March 7-8, sunset to sunset. While the national observance is only a day, we are committed to incorporating the lifestyle into the entire month of March. Now this might sound nearly impossible for some, but here are 9 reasons why you should join our #unplug pledge as well. And don’t forget to join us tonight for a live twitter chat with myself, Heather & Sheree!

1. Disconnect from technology to connect with family

I love my life. I love my job. I love technology and connecting with people through social media. It’s afforded me some wonderful opportunities and has helped a great deal in growing my business. But I’ve also realized that I’ve made a habit of trying to stay connected with both technology and my family at the same time, and it’s not a great habit to keep. So I’m taking the pledge to #unplug so I can be completely in the moment and enjoy uninterrupted time with my family.

2. Connect with friends – LIVE!

You know it’s bad when you don’t talk to someone for a long time, and when you do, they tell you they feel like they’ve been connected with you because of all of your status updates and shares on social media. I’m taking the pledge to #unplug so I can connect with friends and family in real time…over the phone…like we did back in the day.

3. Eliminate distractions

I’ve got quite a few exciting projects I’m working on, so the last thing I need are unnecessary distractions. There is so much great and helpful information out here on the interwebs. But that’s the problem: there is so much great and helpful information out here. It’s way too easy to get distracted and waste precious time because one click led to another, which led to another. I’m taking the pledge to #unplug so I can focus on my work.

4. Learn a new craft or project with the kids

I’m a homeschooling mom of 3. While I’m not the craftiest person in the world, it is forcing me to get my creative juices flowing. It’s not always easy to keep three mini-me’s entertained, but it’s my mission to make teaching fun for them and for me. So while I pick activities to help them learn, I’m learning in the process right along with them. I’m taking the pledge to #unplug so I can have fun creating life-long memories with my kids.
