Introducing…Thursday’s Tasty Throwdown (With a Twist)!

Calling all foodies! I have a confession to make: I am that mom who only learned to cook after I started having kids. I mean, I dabbled a little bit after I got married but it was usually a lot of the same foods (you know, pasta, rice, chicken, rice, pasta, etc.). I have to admit that my husband going vegan this year definitely forced me to step up my culinary skills! But I also have to admit that I’m not one to follow the directions in a recipe very well. Usually, if I want to learn how to cook something, I’ll search for it in my all-recipes app, but only so I can figure out what ingredients I need, and what temperature to cook the food. Other than that, it’s fair game.

This year has been a true year of growth for me in all aspects, but especially as it pertains to cooking it. I mean, by the time my mom and mother-in-law ask me for recipes, I know I have arrived. 😉 The problem is that I’ve learned to cook without measuring the ingredients (partly thanks to them Lol). So when I had five people ask me for my recipe for a chickpea salad I made for a family gathering, all I could do was send them a picture of the ingredients and the steps I used to make it. Even though I’ve been wanting to share recipes on this blog, I didn’t know how to do it since I didn’t take any measurements. Well two of those people I shared my chickpea salad recipe with wanted to make it for Thanksgiving. The result? It turned out great, and everyone they shared it with also love it.

So I thought…surely there has to be other people out there who like to cook but not necessarily have to follow exact recipes and get out a dozen kitchen gadgets. So for those of you who fit the bill, the creation of Thursday’s Tasty Throwdown (With a Twist), was created just for you. 😉 If you like adventure, and would like to join me, here is how it will work:

WHAT: This is a new series to showcase recipes I love that I’ve either created, or tried out from a cookbook or someone else. The catch? Did I mention I rarely measure anything? I’ll give you a list of ingredients and a picture so you know at least know what you’re aiming for. You can decide how much of each ingredient to use, or if you want to replace any of the ingredients altogether.

WHEN: To start, this series will be featured twice a month, right here on Thursdays. The first Tasty Throwdown will commence next Thursday 12/20/12.

HOW TO PLAY: If you want to try out the recipe of the week, leave a comment on the blog letting me know. Then, once you’ve given it your best shot, snap a photo and upload it right into the post (a link will be provided). You will also be able to Facebook, Tweet and Instagram your pictures to me @MomsNCharge with the hashtag:  The person with the best looking picture of their “twisted” version of the recipe, will be featured on my social media platforms the following week. Our Facebook friends will get to decide who the winner it is by casting their vote.

So who’s with me? 🙂
