Help Fight Childhood Cancer With St. Jude Walk/Run in DC

When I started blogging, I wasn’t exactly sure what I wanted to accomplish, but I knew I wanted to use my blog to make a difference in the world. Earlier this year, I became a blogger ambassador for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, TN (you can read about my experience here and previous visit here). Of all the things that I stand for, St. Jude is a cause that I love and appreciate. I admit that before visiting St. Jude and really understanding just how much they do for the families of the patients there, I just didn’t “get it”. Well, September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and I want to help as many other people “get it” as possible.

St Jude Coaches meetup #showyourgoldThis past weekend I attended an event at Nationals Stadium in DC to talk about the importance of the St. Jude walk/run and how we could get involved and start raising money (shout out to my girl T. Espinoza of The Style Medic for tagging along & helping to get some 80’s outfits together for the theme of the night). We had the opportunity to hear from a St. Jude patient and parent, which reminded me why raising money for this organization is so important. The mom shared that her daughter became a patient at the age of 3, and her daughter was given a 20 then 70% survival rate. For twelve years, St. Jude flew them back and forth once a year for annual checkups. They recently found another tumor on her brain that they have been monitoring and may need to have removed next year.  And the only thing this mom will have to focus on is getting her child healthy…not where will she get the money to cover all of these medical expenses. That’s where you and I come in.

St. Jude is leading the way the world understands, treats and defeats childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases. During Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, St. Jude is amplifying its efforts so that patient families never receive a bill for treatment, travel, housing or food – because all a family should worry about is helping their child live. Help us fight childhood cancer with St. Jude walk/run event in DC.

The St. Jude Walk/Run to End Childhood Cancer is a great way for families and friends to join together and help kids and families battling this terrible disease,” said Richard Shadyac Jr. (Rick), President and CEO of ALSAC/St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Take a look at the video interview I did with Rick last week where he shares why events like this walk/run are so critical to the work that is done at St. Jude.

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital® supporters in 58 cities nationwide will join together in the inaugural St. Jude Walk/Run to End Childhood Cancer to the raise awareness and funds that sustain the mission of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital®: Finding cures. Saving Children.

Registration for the St. Jude Walk/Run to End Childhood Cancer is $10 for adults and children ages six and up. And I’m so excited to have officially formed a team, called Moms for St. Jude under Moms ‘N Charge®. If you’re in the DC area, I’d love for you to join my team. The first 10 people to sign up will receive a special “Moms for St. Jude” tshirt on walk day: bit.ly/momsforstjude

The end of childhood cancer starts with me, and you can help. I need you to help me reach my fundraising goal, and I’m certain it can be done. Will you consider joining my team and making a $5 donation today? I’m a firm believer that every dollar helps.

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is where doctors send their toughest cases, because it has the world’s best survival rates for the most aggressive childhood cancer.

Since St. Jude won’t give up the battle against cancer, neither will I. I’m so committed to helping to win this fight that I’m gifting the first ten people to join me, a free “Moms for St. Jude” walk/run t-shirt. All you have to do is join the team, make a donation of at least $10, and meet me in DC on September 26th.

Join me, and help the kids of St. Jude win the fight against childhood cancer. No parent wants to fight this battle, but I can imagine that it’s just a little bit easier to manage when you have the supporters and the hospital of St. Jude behind you.

How your support helps:

  • Families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing, and food because all a family should worry about is helping their child live.
  • St. Jude freely shares the breakthroughs it makes, and every child saves at St. Jude means doctors and scientists worldwide can use that knowledge to save thousands more children.

Please watch this brief video interview I was honored to experience with St. Jude CEO, Rick Shadyac, Jr and 17-year-old St. Jude patient, Adam:

In addition to the walk/run, you can help raise awareness for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month by going gold, as Adam mentioned in the interview. #ShowYourGold is the official hashtag, and you can click here to create your own special profile picture to share on social media and encourage others to raise awareness as well.

Children this young should not have to deal with such burdens. I had a client whose daughter was diagnosed at the age of 4. I will head over to show my support.

Aww I just can’t imagine Nicole. But the one thing I was so touched to see at St. Jude when I visited is that even in their sickness, there was happiness and joy all around. They go above and beyond to take care of the patients and their families. Thank you so much for your support!

Thanks so much JoAnna! It’s so hard to hear about these stories but hopefully with the work that St. Jude does, they won’t last forever. I love the #showyourgold movement as well 🙂

For most of us, cancer has touched our lives in some way. I lost my mother to it.

St. Judes has always been a wonderful organization. Any help they receive is a blessing that reaches back ten fold.

    Go MomsforSt.Judges! and #showyourgold!
