How To Effectively Navigate Change

Change

When the winds of change blow, some people build walls and others build windmills.

~Chinese proverb

Ever had things not go your way? I think it’s safe to say probably most, if not all of us can nod our heads and say, “For sure!”

We each have to navigate this thing called life – where fortunes can be made and lost overnight, love can wax and wane, and a person can be here today and gone tomorrow – life.

If we’re going to successfully navigate our way through life and contend with the winds of change, we’ll need to take certain necessary actions.

Maintain A Positive Outlook

Life brings about changes, and depending on the hand we are dealt in any given situation, we will view these changes as positive or negative. Lord knows I’ve experienced some exhilarating highs and crushing lows in my life. Despite the lows, I’m a firm believer in the importance of maintaining a positive outlook.

When our outlook is positive, we see the glass as half full rather than half empty. Instead of bitterly focusing on the things we don’t have, we are careful to give thanks for what we do have.

Rather than sit on the sidelines and whine about how “others” seem to get all the breaks and opportunities, we get out of our comfort zones and decide to make a leap of faith. Instead of giving in to fear, self-doubt and opposition, we press past the hindrances and move forward, even if we have to “Do it afraid!”

Build Windmills Instead Of Walls

Something else we can do to navigate life’s changes more positively and effectively is to take note of what we’re building. Are we building walls or windmills? Walls keep us confined and limited. They may be great for keeping people out – but they also keep us fenced in.

Unlike fences, which tend to remain stationary, windmills take the energy of oncoming winds and changes it into rotating energy.  When we build windmills, we refuse to allow ourselves to be blown away by the winds of change.  Instead of allowing the winds of change to tear us down or destroy us, we build ourselves up. Ever mindful of the half-filled glass, we learn how to harness the energy of those winds and rotate them for our own good.

Recognize That Change Is Good!

Inevitably, changes in our lives will come, and some of those changes will certainly be unwelcome. By taking the proper perspective, exercising the courage to “do it afraid,” and leveraging circumstances in positive ways, we will no longer dread what at first seem to be contrary winds. When change hits, we’ll be ready. Life? Bring it on. Change? Change is good!

Do you tend to be opposed to change? How have you managed to withstand life’s winds of change?
